The past week brought stark revelations of mistrust of government, health organizations and pharmaceuticals along with rallying cries to put the economy first. The whirlwind of allegations and outcry has been mind numbing and all the while the number of ill and dying continues to rise.
We have been swift to make enemies of all that we fear and have encouraged anyone who would listen to follow us in our blaming.
We have put stock in the very media that we challenged months ago and we are adept at finding new leaders making great proclamations that continue to divide us.
And I ask you? Why? Why do we salute the nurses and doctors and others on the front lines of this crisis and then mock them with our disbelief? Why are we so very eager to cast blame and less eager to change the behaviors that could help us at this time?
Does our fear of death run so deep that we have lost our collective mind? Or is it a fear of living in a world with only one certainty: Things will never be the same again.
Many peoples of the world are faring better than we are. They are not using freedom as an excuse to act with arrogance. They are putting people before economy and requiring their governments do the same.
There are many in our country who have learned to live with less. Many who live in community in order to survive. Our government has not been kind nor has it been consistent. But people find their way. Locally spun mutual aid groups are rising up. You will seldom find these people rallying to reopen the economy or ranting on Facebook. They are far too busy helping one another.
I suggest we follow their lead.
